At that time, in Europe and the United States, especially the United States, in order to solve the environmental pollution caused by disposable plastic packaging products, under the impetus of some corn merchants, a so-called "biodegradable plastic" with polyethylene added starch was launched. This wind was brought to China by individuals and introduced about 10 imported production lines in China.
In the mid-1990s, the development and production of these starch-added degradable plastics, which were titled “biodegradable plastics” or “partial biodegradable plastics” or “light/biodegradable plastics”, reached their peak in China. The craze continued until the beginning of the 21st century, with nearly 50 major research and production units, and hundreds of extrusion granulation production lines with a total capacity of over 100 kt/a.
During this period, the development of the above-mentioned starch-added “degradable plastic” product development force also has national and local scientific research administrative institutions, and has supported the research and development of starch-added degradable plastics and degradable plastic mulch films, such as the national “Eighth Five-Year Plan”. Key projects: Degradable plastic mulch film (Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing Institute of Plastics, Tianjin University, Sichuan University); National “Ninth Five-Year Plan” project: Degradable plastic mulch.
Since the late 1990s and early 2000s, the market has not been effectively opened due to the difficulty of complete biodegradation and high prices due to the incomplete biodegradable plastics, forcing many manufacturers to dismount, so far, only There are a few starch-filled degradation masterbatch manufacturers that maintain order production. During this period, some companies that produce starch-added degradable plastics have turned to so-called environmentally friendly materials filled with calcium carbonate. Some of the products are exported to waste bags for incineration, and some are used in the production of various lunch boxes and bags in China.
